Rewind AI Alternatives for Mac After the Shutdown

Rewind's Mac capture stopped in December 2025 after Meta bought Limitless. The alternatives for personal and work memory on Mac.

Rewind's Mac app stopped capturing on 19 December 2025, after Meta acquired Limitless. The main alternatives are Screenpipe (local screen and audio memory, source-available), bot-free meeting note apps like Granola (meetings only), and Reattend (work memory on Mac that turns your work into decisions and commitments, with team sharing under your control).

What happened to Rewind?

Meta announced it was acquiring Limitless, the company behind Rewind and the Limitless pendant, on 5 December 2025 (TechCrunch). Rewind's Mac app was wound down, with capture disabled on 19 December 2025 (9to5Mac).

What did people use Rewind for?

  1. Personal recall: "What was that page I saw last week?"
  2. Meeting memory: transcripts and summaries.
  3. Work context: what was decided, by whom, and what is owed.

Different alternatives cover different jobs.

Screenpipe

Screenpipe records screen and audio locally and lets you query it with local or cloud models. Its code is on GitHub, but check its licence: it is source-available, and its README says commercial use requires a licence. Good for developers who want to build on top of their own capture.

Granola

Granola takes meeting notes without a meeting bot. It has a free tier and paid plans (Granola pricing). It covers meetings, not the rest of your work.

Reattend

Reattend is a Mac app that remembers your work so you do not have to. How it differs from Rewind:

  • Text, not screenshots. It reads text in work apps through macOS accessibility and never records keystrokes. Screenshots are off by default; you can turn on a small picture of the window, kept on the Mac.
  • Work only, for your organization. You mark which apps and sites count as work, and only work is ever shared.
  • Memories, not recordings. It turns activity into decisions, facts, tasks, commitments and people, with morning and evening briefs and recall from a keyboard shortcut (⌥Space).
  • You see what left. A "What left this Mac" ledger shows everything shared, and you can take any item back.
  • Your choice of AI engine. By default, Reattend's own model, Rabbit, runs on the computer (it is still in training). You can instead use your own API key, or managed AI where Reattend has granted it (a pilot); in those cases text from your activity is sent to that service for processing.
  • Built for teams. Derived knowledge can be shared with your organization under access rules.

Free plan: up to 20 employees, on Rabbit, no time limit. Personal app from $9/month after a 15-day free trial.

Why not Microsoft Recall?

Recall is Windows-only and needs a Copilot+ PC. On managed work devices it is removed by default (Microsoft Learn). See Microsoft Recall vs Reattend.

Choosing

  • Want raw recall of everything you saw, and happy to tinker? Screenpipe.
  • Only need meetings? Granola or similar.
  • Want your work remembered as decisions and commitments, with privacy controls and team sharing? Reattend.

Frequently asked questions

Is Rewind AI shut down?

Yes. Meta acquired Limitless, the company behind Rewind, in December 2025, and the Rewind Mac app's screen and audio capture was turned off on 19 December 2025, according to reporting by 9to5Mac and TechCrunch.

What is the best Rewind alternative for Mac?

For personal, open tinkering: Screenpipe. For meetings only: a bot-free notes app such as Granola. For work memory shared with a team or organization, with privacy controls: Reattend.

Is there a Rewind alternative that works offline?

Screenpipe can run locally with local models. Reattend's desktop app keeps raw capture on the Mac and can run its own model on the computer by default, although that model, Rabbit, is still in training.

Does Microsoft Recall work on Mac?

No. Microsoft Recall is a Windows feature for Copilot+ PCs.
